Ceramic Coaster: Why buy? Just Make it

Happy Thursday to you all!! I hope this week is treating you right. Last night I decided to try the DIY Ceramic Tile project that I posted about earlier this week. I must say..it came out nice. This post will be a tutorial so that you all can go home and do-it-yourself.

Step 1: Get your supplies together

-Four 8x8 tiles (Home Depot for $0.16/tile)
-Tarp (this isn't mandatory but I recommend putting something down so you don't get glue on your floor. Don't use plastic, it'll stick to your tiles)
-Scissors
-Mod Podge Paste (about $6)
-Mod Podge Acrylic Glossy Sealer (about $6)
-Tacky Glue (about $3)
-Scrapbook paper (about $0.97/sheet)(of your choosing)
-Foam brush (about $1)
-Paint tray, (about $0.97) dish, whatever you want to use to put the glue in
-Cork on the roll or sheet (about $3.97 at Jo-Ann's)

Step 2: Cut your scrapbook paper into squares

-Now with this, you can make the scrapbook paper the same size of the tile or a bit smaller. If you make it a bit smaller, the tile will have a border. Either way will look nice. I will try to do some with a border tonight and post it tomorrow..deal?

Step 3: Get your paste together

Step 4: Spread your paste on the tiles

Step 5: Place your scrapbook squares on the tile

Let this sit for about 15 minutes or so. You basically want this to dry/adhere before you continue to mess around with it.

Step 6: Put Mod Podge Paste on top

When you put the mod podge on top of the tile, you will notice it becomes white looking. This is very normal. It will dry clear I promise. Let this sit until dry.
It will look like this once it's dry. Clear again

Step 7: Get your Mod Podge Acrylic Spray ready

This is what it looks like after you spray it. Nice and glossy

Now let this dry. Maybe an hour or so. I actually fell asleep and woke up in the morning and they were dry.

Step 8: Get your Cork backing ready

For this step I cut the cork backing similar to how I cut the scrapbook paper.

Step 9: Place Tacky Glue on the back of the tile

Step 10: Place cork backing on

I flipped them over once I glued them on so they could dry/adhere better

Step 11: Once dried, cut off any excess cork and ta-da you're done...ENJOY THOSE COASTERS :)

This item will also be sold in my ETSY shop

  1. Oh my goodness! I love what you were able to do with this ceramic! I've never thought of doing art projects with them! I just remember getting a ceramic tile underpayment and all the uncoupling membranes when it comes to ceramic, this is quite the innovative idea! Love it!

  2. Thank you..you are just too sweet. My theory is, you can make anything out of ANYTHING..I tend to think out of the box. Stay tuned, my next project will be with socket/outlet covers :)
